NEW BEDFORD — Sally A. (Bondi) Ainsworth, 78, of New Bedford and Mattapoisett, MA, died peacefully at home on October 27, 2010, surrounded by family and her faithful golden retriever, Scamp.

Mrs. Ainsworth was born in Hartford, CT, raised in Newton, MA and graduated from the Newton public school system. She received a B.A. in biology from University of Vermont and a B.S. in biochemistry from Tufts University where she met her husband, Dr. Harry D. Ainsworth of Arlington who passed away in 2008.

She worked in laboratories at the Children’s Medical Center in Boston, New England Medical Center Hospital, Mass. General Hospital, and McClean Hospital where she assisted in neurochemistry research.

In 1965, she began an active community and family life in New Bedford, where she served in many philanthropic and charitable life until this year. In addition to raising four children, her service included Girls Scout Troop Leader, the Board of Children’s Protective Society, Inter-Church Council, Parent-Child Center, College Club, Women’s Club, Trustee of the Howland Fund, and in the mid 1980’s she received her Master’s of Education from Cambridge College and worked for the Dept. of Child and Family Services as a licensed social worker.

Sally was faithfully dedicated to Grace Episcopal Church where she was active in many capacities including music committee, vestry member, lay reader and eucharistic minister.

In her spare time, Sally was a creative knitter, gourmet cook and devoted grandmother and friend to many.

She leaves a sister, Nanette Manganaro of Woburn, MA; brother, Carl Bondi of Middleborough; and four children, Leslie Garber of Westborough, MA, Laurie Andrick of Nashua, NH, Harry D. Ainsworth of Portland, OR and Keith R. Ainsworth of Madison, CT. In addition, Mrs. Ainsworth leaves ten grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Sally’s life will be held on Saturday, November 6th at 11 AM in Grace Episcopal Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Sally Ainsworth’s name of the SouthCoast Humane Society and Shelter in Dartmouth or the Market Ministries Soup Kitchen, 60 Eighth Street, New Bedford, MA.
